So far I have counterstamped over 100 2005 Lincoln cents with an image of a cross. Counterstamping pennies is a well established numismatic, or exonumia related art. You have probably seen a Lincoln penny from the 1970's, usually 1973, with a counterstamp image of JFK's head in the field in front of Abe's face.
The cross counter-stamped Lincoln cents you see on this page were all done by hand using a hammer and screwdrivers.
I am in the process of releasing the Cross counterstamped Lincoln Pennies into circulation by either spending them, or putting them into tip jars, charity jars, and the like. I put an average of 5 of the Counterstamped cents into circulation a day. I am also stamping more every few days or so.
All of the Lincoln cents that I counterstamp with an Image of a cross are shiney, new 2005 P Lincolns.
My purpose in counterstamping all of these Lincoln cents, besides my interest in exonumia, and coin collecting in general, is in the hopes that they circulate for awhile until someone gets one in change who may be having a bad day, and will look at the penny in their hand with an image of a cross on it, and know there is Someone looking out for them.
It also lets me day dream about where these pennies will go and who will own them after they leave my hand. Pennies can stay in circulation for generations, just look through the jar of pennies you probably have in your house and you will find many from the 1960's and 1970's, and maybe even a few "wheaties" from back in the early part of the 1900's.
I hope you find one of these Lincoln cents counterstamped with in an image of the cross in your change one day.
Even if you don't take the time to look through your pocket change and imagine how many people have held the coins in your hand, what they were doing that day, and what they spent them on. Have fun!
